Nashoba Valley Dental was founded on the idea that everyone should have a smile they love. In taking over this dental practice that has served as a staple in the community for years, Dr. Matthew Annese stayed in line with the previous practice owner’s philosophy of patient education and involvement. Add that to a vast selection of services and use of the latest innovations in dental technology, and we help patients get the smile they always wanted in the way that works best for them.
Our dental professionals are driven by a commitment to deliver the highest-quality dental work in a setting that is familiar and relaxed. We never push patients to get treatment they aren’t comfortable with, and if the ideal solution doesn’t work with their budget, we find an alternative that produces results that are just as desirable. Dr. Annese and our staff have created a culture that is energetic, yet laid back, and proactive, yet resourceful.
Dr. Matthew Annese was born in nearby Billerica, Massachusetts. He attended Austin Preparatory school in Reading where he was a member of the varsity hockey team. Dr. Annese was awarded an academic Scholarship to attend Tulane University in New Orleans. After graduating Cum laude with dual majors in Neuroscience and Cell and Molecular Biology all the while helping the city rebuild after the devastation from Hurricane Katrina, Dr. Annese was admitted to the prestigious Henry M Goldman School of Dental Medicine at Boston University. Dr. Annese finished in the top 10% of his dental school class and was awarded the Compassion Care honor for his class. After graduating from Boston university, Dr Annese was awarded the MassPat scholarship which allowed him to work in Dorchester to provide excellent dental care to the underserved and those less fortunate to be able to afford the care they deserve. After a few years in Dorchester, and a few years in local private practices, Dr. Annese bought the office here in Shirley from a previous dentist and Nashoba Valley Dental was created.
The mission statement Dr. Annese truly stands by to provide customized, high quality honest dental care in a state of the art setting with an amazing team. Dr. Annese constantly takes over 10x’s the amount of continuing education needed to maintain a license and is constantly implementing new technology in the office to allow the patient to get the best dental care possible. Dr. Annese’s current focus is in implantology, from single implants to the All on 4, teeth in a day full arch implants, to veneers and smile makeovers, and sedation dentistry. Dr. Annese is a Fellow in the International Congress of Oral Implantologist and an Associate Fellow at the American Academy of Implant Dentistry. He is trained to provide IV and Oral Conscious sedation to provide comfort to those who are anxious and fearful visiting the dentists.
With thousands of implants placed,and thousands of new life changing smiles, Dr. Annese frequently flies all over the country and is asked to lecture, speak, and train other doctors to be able to provide the care he provides here at Nashoba Valley Dental. Doctors fly in and also spend days at the office to see the newest technology and to learn. Dr. Annese truly has a passion for providing the best dental care to his patients and elevating the dental profession as a whole.
In his free time Dr. Annese enjoys coaching his son Bennet’s t-ball and hockey teams, taking his daughter Adeline to her dance show practices, chasing around his crawling daughter Nora, and enjoying skiing,traveling and a glass of wine with his wife Allison. He still plays pick up hockey from time to time and is trying to lower his handicap on the course.
Originally from Northeastern Pennsylvania, Dr. Tiffany Smith grew up in a family of medical professionals. Dr. Smith realized her true passion for dentistry from a young age, and became the first dental professional in her family. Dr. Smith received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of South Florida where she was a Division I cheerleader for football, basketball, and volleyball. She went on to receive her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Touro College of Dental Medicine in New York where she was the recipient of the Marc Rosenblum Award for Excellence in Operative Dentistry and the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry Student Award of Merit. Dr. Smith continued her education by completing a General Practice Residency at Harvard School of Dental Medicine. After completing her postgraduate training, Dr. Smith decided to make Massachusetts her home. Dr. Smith enjoys all aspects of dentistry, but has a particular affinity for cosmetic and aesthetic dentistry! Dr. Smith is also passionate about the importance of continuing education, and has committed herself to providing her patients with the highest quality of care. She has completed advanced training in the placement of implants and the administration of nitrous oxide. Dr. Smith remains an active member of the American Dental Association and the Massachusetts Dental Society.
With five years of experience, Dr. Joe recently joined our Shirley office and has already made a positive impact on both patients and colleagues. He earned his Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree from Boston University in 2020, completed a one-year General Practice Residency in the Bronx in 2021, and went on to practice in private offices just outside Manhattan before returning to Boston. Dr. Joe is dedicated to creating a calm, supportive environment where patients feel heard and valued. He prioritizes clear communication and thoughtful care to build trust and long-term relationships. One of his favorite parts of working at NVD is the collaborative, patient-focused culture. He appreciates being part of a team that works together to truly make a difference. Outside the office, Dr. Joe enjoys staying active at the gym and spending time with his golden retriever, Brodie—whether relaxing at home or exploring the outdoors. Looking ahead, Dr. Joe is focused on continued growth as he sharpens his clinical skills and deepens his patient connections.

Whether coming in for a basic cleaning or to discuss particular dental work, we will first take the time to find out about your history and your goals, and then work closely with you to find the best course of treatment. Our dental professionals will do an oral exam and take x-rays, if necessary, to determine the options that are available for you. We will always suggest the ideal treatment plan, but will only move forward once you understand what that entails and are comfortable with it. By keeping up with the latest technological advancements in dentistry, we can offer a wide range of solutions to fit every budget. Please plan on being at our office for an hour to an hour and a half for your first appointment.
