Teeth whitening is the most common cosmetic dentistry procedure performed at dental offices in America. In as little as one treatment, you can reverse the signs of aging, as well as stains caused by issues, like tobacco use. It’s fast, totally pain free, and affordable.
At Nashoba Valley Dental, Dr. Matthew Annese uses the latest teeth whitening products from Zoom and KoR to provide the very best teeth whitening services in Groton, Shirley, Lunenburg, and Pepperhill.
Every teeth whitening product, from toothpaste to mouthwash, and professional whitening treatments, uses the same basic principles. The primary ingredient in teeth whitening treatments is peroxide. Peroxides, like carbamide peroxide and hydrogen peroxide contain special, volatile oxygen molecules.
These molecules are highly active, so when they contact surface stains on tooth enamel, a violent reaction occurs. This reaction breaks the molecular bonds that hold stains onto your teeth. Essentially, they are “bleached” away.In turn, this provides you with a brighter, more natural smile.
Teeth whitening can only treat external stains on the teeth. Stains caused by smoking or tobacco use, drinking coffee and wine, or eating dark-colored fruits – like berries – can be removed by teeth whitening products. Teeth that have yellowed due to age can also be treated by teeth whitening.
Teeth that are discolored due to internal problems, like an amalgam filling, tooth decay, or a reaction to antibiotics, like tetracycline, cannot be treated with traditional teeth whitening solutions.
We offer both in-office and at-home whitening services at Nashoba Valley Dental. Both options provide you with a brighter smile. The main difference is in how long each treatment takes.
For in-office teeth whitening, we typically use Zoom whitening products. Zoom is a specialized teeth whitening treatment that is very fast and effective. In-office whitening is a good idea if you need immediate results, like a bright smile for a wedding or important event. In as little as 45 minutes, Dr. Annese can provide you with a smile that’s up to 5-10 shades whiter. This is because a UV light is used to “activate” the Zoom peroxide and lift surface stains quickly.
However, if you don’t mind waiting a little longer for results, or you prefer to spend less time in the dentist’s chair, we offer at-home teeth whitening. We use KoR whitening products for at-home whitening. Dr. Annese will create a customized set of trays for you at Nashoba Valley Dental. Then, you simply take these trays home and wear them according to the instructions Dr. Annese gives you. Within just a few weeks, you’ll have a noticeably brighter smile!

Choosing to have your teeth whitened at Nashoba Valley Dental has a variety of benefits. Firstly and most importantly, it makes you feel better about your appearance. Whether your teeth have been stained by coffee and tea, discolored by smoking, or have become yellow or stained due to wear and tear over the years, teeth whitening can reverse years of staining in just one appointment.
This helps you feel proud about your smile and your appearance once again. You won’t have to hide your teeth when you smile, eat, and laugh. Not only that, but teeth whitening also makes you look younger, since discolored and stained teeth can make you look older than you really are.
Teeth whitening is also very affordable, especially compared to other cosmetic dentistry treatments like veneers and dental bonding. Even if you’re on a tight budget, teeth whitening is a good choice.
Finally, choosing professional whitening rather than DIY whitening with over-the-counter products ensures you get consistent results. DIY kits may not whiten your teeth evenly, and are usually much less effective than professional whitening.
Choosing to have your teeth whitened by a dentist like Dr. Matthew Annese also protects your teeth, since improper DIY whitening can cause permanent damage to your teeth and gums.
The process is slightly different depending on whether you choose in-office whitening or at-home whitening from Nashoba Valley Dental. Let’s explain what you should expect, starting with in-office whitening.
In-office whitening usually takes just one appointment at our office. To begin the process, Dr. Annese will clean your teeth, then use cotton balls and lip/cheek retractors to keep your tongue, lips, and cheeks away from your teeth once the whitener is applied. Then, a special protectant is applied to your gums to prevent the whitener from contacting your gums.
After this, Dr. Annese will apply the whitener directly to your teeth, activating it with a powerful UV light. Then, the whitener will be rinsed away. Dr. Annese will check the brightness of your teeth, and repeat this process until they have reached your desired level of brightness. The entire process usually takes about an hour.
The at-home whitening process is a bit different. To begin the process, you will come to our office for a quick appointment. Dr. Annese will take impressions of your mouth using putty and dental trays, and send these to a dental lab. The lab will make a set of reusable, custom-fitted whitening trays that will fit over your teeth perfectly.
This takes a few weeks, though, so you’ll come back to pick up your whitening trays from Nashoba Valley Dental once your whitening trays arrive at our office. Once you get your trays, Dr. Annese will also give you a set of teeth whitening products to use, as well as instructions on how to whiten your teeth properly. Usually, you’ll whiten your teeth at home for about 60 minutes per day. It may take 2-3 weeks to fully whiten your teeth, depending on your desired level of brightness.
