wisdom tooth removal

If you’re in your late teens or early twenties, you may be wondering if your wisdom teeth need to be removed. Wisdom teeth can often cause dental health issues when they erupt, so around 85% of people have them removed. Most people do not have enough room in their mouths for their third set of molars, particularly if they have had braces or other orthodontic work done in the past.

This can cause damage to surrounding teeth, overcrowding, a change in bite, tooth infections, and more. This is why wisdom teeth are typically removed once they start growing in. However, not everyone needs to have their wisdom teeth removed. If you’re experiencing discomfort and pain around your rear molars, we recommend scheduling a consultation with Dr. Annese right away to determine the best course of action.

common reasons for extraction

Wisdom teeth are the most commonly-pulled teeth. However, if your teeth are damaged due to an oral injury, periodontal disease, or tooth decay, you may need to have one or more of them removed. Teeth may also need to be extracted in order to prepare for another dental procedure, such as the placement of a dental implant, or the fitting of a full-arch denture.

what to expect

the extraction process

The tooth extraction process is very simple, minimally-invasive, and only takes about 5 minutes per tooth. First, your mouth will be cleaned and numbed. Then, Dr. Annese will use a dental elevator to loosen the tooth in its socket. When it’s loose enough to pull out, it will be grasped firmly by the root and removed. To complete the procedure, the area is cleaned and disinfected, and the now-empty socket is sutured shut.
