The idea of getting cosmetic procedures from the dentist might sound strange, but in actuality, many dental offices have services that go beyond improving your smile!

One example is Juvederm injections, which can greatly improve your appearance and give you a more youthful look.

If you’re interested in Juvederm, here’s everything you need to know about the procedure and how it works:

How Does Juvederm Work?

Juvederm is essentially a natural filler. Its main active ingredient is hyaluronic acid, and when injected, it can add some volume to the facial tissue.

The substance can also stipulate the product of collagen, which is the molecule that helps plump the skin and can reduce wrinkles. Even hyaluronic acid is naturally produced in the body, but as you get older, both hyaluronic acid and collagen levels decrease, which is why wrinkle and saggy skin can start appearing.

The Difference Between Juvederm and Botox

While both treatments can help improve your appearance, they have completely different methods to get the results you want.

Whether Juvederm plumps the skin, Botox temporarily paralyzes the muscles from contracting, which leads to wrinkles diminishing. This is why Botox is commonly used in the mouth, forehead, and eye areas. Your facial expressions (meaning the movement of the muscles in your face) ultimately lead to wrinkle formation.

What to Expect During Your Juvederm Treatment

During the procedure, Dr. Matthew Annese will map your face and single out the exact areas that need to be treated, and Juvederm will only be injected into those areas.

Then, he will likely massage the area to make sure it’s distributed evenly, and reduce the chances of swelling. The entire procedure is over in under an hour in most cases, but it can vary depending on the areas being treated.

Dr. Annese will also apply a topical anesthetic to numb the areas and reduce any discomfort you might face because of the injections, so you will be perfectly comfortable throughout the entire procedure. Once it’s done, you may receive some ice to gently apply to these areas and reduce swelling.

You’ll also receive some at-home care tips to help reduce swelling, such as:

  • Avoiding physically challenging activities for around 24 hours
  • Avoid touching your face
  • Sleeping or resting on your stomach

Dr. Annese will provide you with more personalized care tips if necessary.
