What Is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment invented as a better alternative to traditional metal braces. One of the most common complaints regarding braces is that they are quite visible, and some patients are reluctant to wear such a dental device.

Invisalign is designed to align teeth using clear acrylic trays called aligners that are removable, comfortable, and barely noticeable when worn. The results Invisalign can achieve are equivalent to wearing braces, and the duration of treatment is noticeably shorter. Some patients even achieve their desired results in as little as 6 months!

During the first consultation, the dentist will create a 3D model of your teeth. The aligners will be created based on this model, with the needed adjustments being gradually applied through changing sets of aligners.

What Cannot Be Fixed With Invisalign?

Invisalign clear aligners can solve mild and moderate orthodontic problems and misalignments in the teeth. These cases include overbites, underbites, open bites, gapped teeth, crowded teeth, and crooked teeth. The degree of misalignment will determine if Invisalign is the right treatment for you.

The assessment is done by taking a panoramic x-ray of your mouth, through which the doctor can determine the nature of the orthodontic problems.

Invisalign cannot fix gapped teeth with more than 6 mm of space between them. It also has its limitations if a tooth needs to rotate more than 20 degrees to align with the others. This technology cannot help with teeth that have to be raised or lowered, or with more severe orthodontic problems that involve the jaw bone.

Other cases that might not be compatible with Invisalign include the use of other dental devices, such as dental bridges. An initial assessment from a dentist trained to use Invisalign will tell you clearly if this technology is right for you, or if you need traditional braces to correct your orthodontic issues.
